Apapa Customs Sets New Record with N17.9B Daily Collection

… As Comptroller Olomu Promises Sustained Tempo

By Ibe Wada

The Nigeria Customs Service, Apapa Area Command, recorded a significant milestone on 14 June 2024, with a record daily collection of N17,903,312,518.80, marking the highest collection since its establishment.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, made this known during a press briefing held on Wednesday, 19 June 2024, at the Command, stating that the feat is a result of Customs officers’ intensified efforts to curb revenue loopholes amid dwindling cargo throughput estimated to have dropped by more than 50 percent.

He said, “This feat is the beginning of many revenue collection, trade facilitation and anti-smuggling exploits to be achieved while discharging our statutory responsibilities”.

He equally revealed that the Command recently intercepted 2 containers of used clothing and Crusader soap.

The CAC, who assumed office just a month ago, expressed confidence in the command’s ability to maintain and exceed its mandate.

He highlighted the dedication of the command’s officers and staff in achieving this remarkable feat.

According to him, the timing of the unprecedented revenue generation also coincides with the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi’s one year in office, “whose leadership has been instrumental in our success”.

He urged all port users to adhere strictly to lawful operational guidelines, emphasising the importance of compliance with import and export regulations, timely duty payments, and active participation in national interests.

Adeniyi made this call when she led her executives and COWA members on a massive campaign against the menace of drug abuse at two junior secondary schools in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory: Junior Secondary School, Garki and Karu, to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The sensitisation was co-organized by National Bridge and Bond Initiatives under the leadership of Barr. Festus Onifade, started at the Government Junior Secondary School, Garki, where she commended the principal and teachers of the school for giving COWA the enabling environment to stage their campaign for the students.

“On this historic day, COWA deemed it necessary to come to you and encourage you all to be good citizens of this country. I am already seeing governors, president of this country and even officers’ wives – so don’t agree to jeopardise your lives and give up your dreams by venturing into drug addiction,” the COWA National President said.

The president, who described the war against drug abuse as a collective responsibility for members of society, encouraged all women to join forces to fight against drug abuse and illicit dealing in narcotics to produce a generation.

Meanwhile, the COWA National President has visited the Government Junior Secondary School in Karu, Abuja, where she charged students to be wary of keying into drugs usage, as it gives birth to deadly health issues, memory loss and other physical as well as spiritual disorders.

Adeniyi said, “We, therefore, wish to encourage you to be good children. Listen to your parents and teachers more and always do what is right to make your country better. I was impressed with the way you expressed your candid responses before us here, but I would like to let you know that we all make mistakes. However, that man is that who makes mistakes and grabs lessons out of it.”

The President, who encouraged the students to be committed to learning to help them acquire useful knowledge and skills to build their future and that of Nigeria, said, “We want you to support your nation by shying away from drugs. Be disciplined and avoid any form of misconduct either at school or at home to make our country better.”
