Serena Williams Ousted in The Semi-finals of U.S. Open

Serena Williams was beaten 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the semi-finals of the U.S Open by Victoria Azarenka on Thursday, denying her the chance of winning a record-equalling 24th grand slam singles title on home soil this year.
Belarusian Azarenka will play Japan’s Naomi Osaka in her third final at flushing meadows on Saturday, having lost the previous two to Williams in 2012 and 2013.
Six-times U.S open champion Williams came out firing winners from all sides of the Arthur Ashe stadium court and wrapped up the opening set in little more than half an hour.
Azarenka, playing her first grand slam semi-final in seven years, raised her game in the second stanza and came out on top after some explosive exchanges of power-hitting.
The twice Australian open champion kept up the pressure in the third as 38-year-old Williams struggled with an injury to her left ankle and sealed her place in the final with an ace.

Nadal Beats Thompson to Reach Quarter-Finals

World number 61 Thompson gave Nadal plenty to think about, but missed a set point to force a decider in his first meeting with the 20-time grand slam champion.
Top seed Nadal, who claimed his 1,000th career victory by coming from behind to beat Feliciano Lopez on Wednesday, has never won the Paris title.
Playing in his first tournament since taking a record-extending 13th french open crown across the french capital at Roland Garros last month, Nadal will face fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta for a semi-final spot.
Carreno Busta, who has reached the US open semi-finals and french open quarters this year, needs to win the title this week to have any chance of snatching the last ATP tour finals spot from Diego Schwartzman.
Nadal raced through the opener against thompson in just 31 minutes, breaking twice and sealing it on his fourth set point after a brief stutter from 40-0 up in the seventh game.
