South East Governors Meet Over Attacks in Region, Vow to Tackle Insecurity

Members of the South East governors’ forum have held a meeting as part of efforts to tackle the rising security challenges in the region.

This follows the incessant attacks that have claimed lives and left several injured in various states in the region, with police stations and offices of the independent national electoral commission (INEC) being the targets in most cases.

At the virtual meeting, the governors discussed ways to tackle the security threats in the region and secure the lives of the people. they vowed to leave no stone unturned in tracking and bringing to justice all those involved in what they described as the armed banditry currently ravaging the South East.

The governors also sympathised with the families of all those who have lost their lives during the moment of violent hostilities in the region. they, however, appealed to the people to exercise restraint and allow the security agencies to continue with their investigations.

President Buhari Calls for Synergy Among West African Countries

President Muhammadu Buhari has called for collaboration among countries in the West African sub-region and those in the Sahel to fight the security challenges confronting them.

The President stated this on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, while receiving the new Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mahamat Saleh Annadif.

Buhari in a statement by his Special Adviser, Femi Adesina, said, “You are our neighbour. You have vast experience on matters affecting the Sahel, having served for five years in Mali. I hope you will get the countries to work together to confront the issues affecting them.”

The President, while promising Nigeria’s support to the Special Rep to aid his new assignment, expressed hopes that under the auspices of UNOWAS, most problems especially those that have to do with instability in Libya, and how it affects all west African countries will be sorted out.

Annadif in his remarks, said he was visiting shortly after his appointment because he recognized Nigeria’s crucial role in West Africa. He noted that the problems of the Sahel region were not new to him, which is why, more than ever, he would depend on the help of Nigeria to succeed.

CP Orders Immediate Deployment of More Personnel to Zaria

Commissioner of Police, Kaduna State Command Umar Muri, has ordered the immediate deployment of more personnel to Zaria in an effort to tackle the security situation in parts of Zazzau Emirate.

Muri disclosed this when he paid a visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Amb. Ahmed Bamalli in Zaria on Monday.

He assured the emir that more police personnel would be deployed with a view to addressing banditry, kidnapping, and other security challenges in the state.

The CP urged community leaders to work closely with the local vigilante always.

He called on traditional rulers and residents of various communities to support the police and other sister agencies in intelligence gathering.

Bauchi Governor Appoints Ex-Commissioner Aminu Gamawa as Chief Of Staff

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed has appointed the former Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Aminu Hassan Gamawa as his chief of staff (CoS).

Mohammed’s media aide Mukhtar Gidado in a statement said that Gamawa, who holds a master’s and Ph.D. in law from Harvard Law School at Harvard University, USA is the new CoS to the governor.

The appointment, according to Gidado, takes immediate effect. Gamawa, who hails from Gamawa Local Government Area of the State is a legal practitioner, teacher, policy expert and public servant. He has worked across a wide range of organizations, government agencies, educational institutions, and non-profitable entities.

The Chief of Staff was appointed as Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Bauchi State in 2019. He was also the State Focal Person for World Bank Projects, Chairman of Bauchi State COVID-19 Economic Recovery Committee 2020.

Gamawa was awarded with the National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM) Award in 2020. Mohammed had on Wednesday last week dissolved his cabinet. He said that he asked them to go to allow fresh hands in the government.
