US will not join consensus for Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala WTO position

US disapprove Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from being the first African WTO head

The United States of America has said it will not join consensus for Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo Iweala as the next director-general of the World Trade Organisation.
The united states deputy trade representative, Dennis Shea made this known at an informal head of delegations meetings held on Wednesday.
Members present at the meeting pledged commitment to continue working to reach a consensus before the November 9 general council meeting where the winner will be officially announced.
This comes after news filtered in that Dr Okonjo Iweala has emerged as the new director-general of the global trade organization. Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo Iweala and south Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee are in a close contest for who will head the global trade body.

Why US Voted Against  Ngozi Okonjo Iweala for WTO DG

US has show support for South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee saying she could reform the body and that WTO must be led by someone with real, hands-on experience in the field.

it added: “This is a very difficult time for the WTO and international trade. There have been no multilateral tariff negotiations in 25 years, the dispute settlement system has gotten out of control, and too few members fulfill basic transparency obligations. The WTO is badly in need of major reform”.

Earlier on Wednesday, after a WTO delegates meeting to discuss the appointment, spokesman Keith Rockwell said just one member country did not support Ms. Okonjo-Iweala.

Do you think the US reason for disapproving the Nigerian ex-finance minister Ngozi Okonjo Iweala is justified?

Looters

The Plateau State Government on Wednesday begun the prosecution of over 300 suspected looters and arsonists in the state.
They were accused of looting, criminal trespass and inciting public disturbance, among other charges.
The suspects, who had been in military and police detention after they were arrested in different parts of Jos and the Bukuru metropolis between Saturday and Sunday, were moved to the Bassa Local Government Area on Wednesday for arraignment.

The defendants were arraigned one after the other at Jebbu Bassa Area Court before several judges including Justices N S Dashe, Adar Roseline Baraje, and L B Longs as well as Lawal Sulaiman, among others.

In all the cases brought before the judges, the prosecutors from the state Ministry of Justice told the court that the accused persons committed the offences against the state and should be prosecuted according to the law.
The defence counsels, however, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy for the accused persons, particularly as they were first offenders.
The defence counsels also pleaded for short sentencing with an option of fine after their clients pleaded guilty to the offences.

WAEC release results

The West African Examinations Council has said the results of the 2020 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination would be released next week.

The results were supposed to be out today but the examination body said the postponement was due to the violence and arson in the country which affected some of its offices and some of its operations nationwide.

The unrest experienced in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests against police brutality had forced governments to impose curfew in their respective states.

“WASSCE SC 2020 Results Release Date: Dear candidates, the Council had planned to release the results today in fulfilment of our Project 45 but due to the curfew imposed last week, it had to be postponed till next week.

“The exact date will be made known soon,” @waecnigeria tweeted on Wednesday.

When contacted, the Head of Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria, Demianus Ojijeogu, confirmed the development
