Gumel: Sports Administration Key to Development

The third Module of fifth edition of Sports Administration and Advanced Sports Management Course (ASMC) started on Tuesday November 11, 2020 at the National Olympic Committee (NOC) boardroom, National Stadium Complex, Surulere, Lagos.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) course which the NOC is partaking in, is a global sport management course put together to produce and promote excellence in sports administration.

Engineer Habu Gumel, President, Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) at the opening session told the participants to see the course as a key to national development and an opportunity to know and as well have first hand information as regards sports administration globally.

“The International Olympic Committee (IOC) through the Olympic Solidarity designed this course to provide National Olympic Committees the needed assistance to conduct administrative courses in their respective countries. This is to enhance their skills as sports administrators in their day to day activities”, Gumel added.

The three day programme which is virtual and conventional, has twenty five participants in attendance with Prof. Clement Fasan and Mr. Dyagas Jonathan as certified IOC Program Directors. They are assisted by Mrs. Nyakno Oluokun, Assistant Director, National Institute for Sports and Mrs. Olanipekun Bodunrin of the Lagos State Sports Commission.

The course ends on November 13, 2020.

World record holder Agnes Tirop found dead in Kenya

Kenyan world record holder Agnes tirop has been found dead at her home in the western town of iten, a training hub for many athletes.

The two-time world athletics championships bronze medallist, who finished fourth in the Olympic 5,000m final two months ago, was 25.

Kenyan police have been investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, with crime scene investigators at her house on Wednesday.

The country’s athletics body said in a statement said it was still working to unearth more details surrounding her demise.

Last month, tirop set the world record for a women’s only 10km road race in Germany.

As well as her 10,000m bronze medals at both the 2017 and 2019 world athletics championships, tirop also impressed off the track.

In September, she set a time of 30 minutes and one second in Herzogenaurach, Germany, as she took 28 seconds off the old 10km road race record set in 2002.

Tirop began her career as a junior athlete in 2011, winning two bronze medals in the 5,000m at that year’s world junior championships.

Four years later, during a rapid ascent, she won the senior world cross country championships in china becoming the second-youngest medallist at that level.

Kaduna Marathon: Runners will create history in Kaduna says Dr Balarabe

The acting Governor of Kaduna State, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe said runners present at the half marathon will create a new history in the first official marathon event in this part of the country.

The Kaduna marathon event will take place by 7:30am on Saturday.

She said, “Your decision to run in the Kaduna Marathon has made the event possible. Whether your motivation is glory, professional esteem, to support a good cause or sheer fun, you have made it your race.

“When you start the race by tomorrow, you will be creating a new history as the first runners in the first official marathon event in this part of the country.”

Balarabe said that the state is delighted to welcome sponsors, elite runners, athletics officials, journalists and other participants to Kaduna for the first edition of the Kaduna Marathon.

Dr. Balarabe explained that the Kaduna Marathon provides another platform to bring people to Kaduna and to bring the people of Kaduna together in a common endeavour.

She thanked the event sponsors for the support they have provided to make Kaduna Marathon possible, expressing that after this first edition, the sponsors will commit as long-term partners for the event.

The Acting Governor thanked residents of Kaduna metropolis for their support and appealed to them to kindly bear the inconveniences road closures my cause for some hours tomorrow.

She gave assurance that the Kaduna State Government will make the second edition of the event in 2021 even better than the inaugural edition.

Gumel Urge Athletes, Coaches to Stay Off Drugs.

The Medical & Scientific Commission of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) under the auspices of the Olympic Solidarity began their 3 day Sports Medicine Seminar themed, “Building Blocks of Protection of Clean Athletes Health – Strategy to Actualize the Mandate of the International Olympic committee (IOC)”, on Thursday, November 19th, 2020 at the Sir Molade OkoyaThomas SportsHall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The programme is tailored to highlight best practices obtainable in sports globally, in accordance with the IOC Medical Commission Guidelines and Medical Resources in the Protection of the Health and Integrity of Clean Athletes.

President, Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engineer Habu Ahmed Gumel, while addressing over one hundred and fifty coaches, athletes and sports medicines officials, who attended the first session of the workshop, enjoined the participants to take advantage of the learning opportunity in order to further update their wealth of knowledge.

“The continous support of the Olympic Solidarity has brought positive changes to the nation’s Sports Medicines Administration System. He charged the sports administrators to gear up to a better adaptation of the Olympic Solidarity objectives”, Gumel said.

The chairman, Medical and Scientific Commission, Dr Festus Odunayo Oshoba, said the seminar became imperative as the International Olympic Committee, IOC, wants to ensure that atheltes, coaches, sports physicians and sports administrators are well informed of the emerging global trend in sports medicine management and administration, hence the reason for the three- day workshop.

Oshoba, said they need to be aware of the necessary measures the IOC had put in place in ensuring that athletes win a particular event without cheating or using drugs to enhance their performances, adding that participating in Olympic Games or other sporting activities was not a do- or die affairs but it’s mandatory for the NOC to organise the workshop in order to further advise athletes not to feature in competitions with a mindset of winning at all cost.

The seminar, which had in attendance Dr Akin Amao, Professor Tunde Makanju, NOC Secretary General, Mr Banji Oladapo among others, will come to a close on Saturday, November 21st, 2020.
