Kwara Customs Generates ₦3.89 Billion, Records Seizures Worth ₦204.7 Million By Bimpe Audu The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kwara Area Command, generated over ₦3.89 billion in revenue in the first quarter of 2026 and recorded seizures with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) exceeding ₦204.7 million between March and May 2026. The Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Najeem Ogundeyi, disclosed this during a press briefing held on Wednesday, 7 May 2026. According to him, despite the closure of Nigeria’s border with the Republic of Benin since August 2019, the Command has continued to generate revenue mainly through excise factories and anti-smuggling activities. The Command generated a total of ₦3,895,333,182.94 in the first quarter of 2026. On anti-smuggling operations, officers of the Command carried out several interceptions across major smuggling routes within Kwara State and neighbouring areas, including the Bukuro axis, the Gurumi and Sikira axis, Okuta axis, Boriya axis, Tewu and Bero axis, Sango and Okeoyi road, Alapa axis, Malete and Bani axis, Offa and Idofian road, Lagos-Ilorin Expressway, and Eiyenkorin axis. Ogundeyi explained that the areas remain under close watch because of their frequent use by smugglers involved in illegal trade and the movement of prohibited goods. Items seized during the period include 155 bags of foreign parboiled rice valued at ₦52.4 million, 70 pieces of second-hand tyres worth ₦1.4 million, 418 jerrycans of vegetable oil with a DPV of ₦27.1 million, and 3,697 packages of macaroni pasta valued at ₦110.9 million. Other items intercepted were 237 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit totalling 5,925 litres with a DPV of ₦2.37 million, 49.5 kilogrammes of cannabis valued at ₦4 million, 376 kilogrammes of tramadol valued at ₦564,000, 19 jerrycans of corrosive oxidiser chemicals valued at ₦792,439, as well as 18 bales of second-hand clothing worth ₦5.1 million. The Command recorded nine seizures within the period under review with a total Duty Paid Value of ₦204,763,439. “We will continue to secure our borders and ensure that those involved in illegal activities are brought to justice while legitimate trade thrives,” Ogundeyi stated. Ogundeyi commended officers of the Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU) and Customs Police Unit (CPU) for the improvement recorded in intelligence gathering, operations and discipline within the Command. He further praised the cooperation between the Command and other security agencies, describing the relationship as instrumental to the successes recorded. Ogundeyi attributed the achievements to the leadership and support of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and the Service's management team for providing the necessary operational support to the Command.

Onne Customs Boosts FG Revenue with Record N77.3bn in April By Muhammad Bashir The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Port Harcourt II Area Command, Onne, has recorded its highest monthly revenue collection, generating N77,325,318,984.07 in April 2026, in a major boost to the Federal Government’s revenue drive under the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi. The figure, according to a statement signed by the Acting Command Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Customs I Paul Gimba, on behalf of Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Aliyu Alkali, on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, represents a 70.2 per cent increase compared to April 2025 and stands as the highest monthly revenue recorded since the establishment of the Command. Speaking on the development, the CAC attributed the feat to the policy direction of the Comptroller-General of Customs and the commitment of officers and stakeholders operating within the port. He said, “What we have achieved in April is a clear reflection of the vision of the Comptroller-General of Customs and the collective commitment of our officers and stakeholders towards national economic growth.” Comptroller Alkali said the Command’s improved performance was driven by deliberate operational reforms focused on trade facilitation, strict compliance and revenue optimisation. According to him, the Command has continued to simplify cargo clearance procedures while removing avoidable operational bottlenecks to support legitimate trade. “Our focus has been to create an efficient clearance process while ensuring full compliance with extant government fiscal policies. We understand that trade facilitation and enforcement must work side by side,” Comptroller Alkali said. He noted that the Command has also sustained a performance-driven culture aimed at surpassing revenue targets and strengthening the ease of doing business within the maritime sector. He added, “This is not just about revenue. It is about building confidence in our processes, improving operational efficiency, and contributing meaningfully to national development.” The Customs Area Controller commended officers and men of the Command for their professionalism, discipline and dedication to duty, describing the achievement as a collective victory. “The success we recorded is a product of teamwork, integrity, and the discipline of our officers who remain committed to the mandate of the Service,” Comptroller Alkali affirmed. He reaffirmed the Command’s readiness to sustain the momentum and continue contributing significantly to the economic objectives of the Nigeria Customs Service.

Adeniyi pledges Deeper Impact as Customs, Yakubu Gowon University Renew Strategic Alliance By Muhammad Bashir The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has pledged to revitalise the long-standing institutional relationship between the Nigeria Customs Service and Yakubu Gowon University (formerly University of Abuja), with renewed support aimed at improving learning, research and student development. CGC Adeniyi made the commitment at the Customs Headquarters, Maitama, Abuja, on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, while receiving the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, who led the institution's principal officers on a courtesy visit. Speaking during the engagement, the Comptroller-General recalled his long-standing institutional relationship with the university, noting that efforts to establish a formal partnership between the two institutions date back several years. He said, “I have a long institutional history with this university. During my tenure as Commandant of the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College, we made serious efforts to formalise a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding. We went very far in the process and were close to signing, but leadership changes on both sides affected the process.” CGC Adeniyi said that despite the delay, the Service had maintained its support for the institution over the years through strategic interventions. “At different times, we supported the university with transportation facilities, including the provision of a 32-seater bus. We also established a fully equipped computer centre with close to one hundred workstations. These were deliberate efforts aimed at building lasting institutional partnerships.” The Customs boss assured the university management that the Service would carefully examine the new areas of collaboration presented during the visit, with emphasis on projects capable of delivering meaningful impact. “For us, beyond legacy, what matters most is impact. We understand the realities facing Nigerian universities, from transportation challenges to infrastructure gaps. Our interest is to support initiatives that will create a conducive learning environment and positively impact students,” he stated. He added that the Service was ready to work with the university through a phased implementation model, as needed, saying, “If there are multiple projects and we are unable to execute everything at once, we can adopt a phased approach and focus on priority areas that will make the greatest difference.” CGC Adeniyi further stressed the importance of having a university in the nation’s capital that reflects the status and identity of the Federal Capital Territory, noting, “It is important for us to have a university in Abuja that truly reflects the status of Nigeria’s capital. I am willing to work with you in that regard.” Earlier, Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi commended the leadership of the Comptroller-General and the contributions of the Nigeria Customs Service to national development, describing the Service as one of the institutions supporting the Federal Government’s economic and governance reforms. According to him, “We have come with the highest level of leadership of the university to congratulate you and appreciate the tremendous work being done by the Nigeria Customs Service under your leadership.” The Vice-Chancellor said the visit was also aimed at exploring areas of strategic partnership between the two institutions, noting that the university, with undergraduate student population of nearly 40,000, faces growing operational and infrastructural demands. He said, “As the only conventional public university in the Federal Capital Territory, we face enormous responsibilities. Support in areas such as mass transit buses, ICT infrastructure, research facilities, and professional collaboration will significantly strengthen our capacity.” He also identified the university’s Centre for Defence and Migration Studies as a potential area of partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service in border management, migration studies, executive training and national security research. “We are ready to partner with the Nigeria Customs Service. The real beneficiaries of such collaboration will be young Nigerians who represent the future leadership of this country,” he said.

Customs Unleashes ‘Operation Hawk’, Hits Hard on Drug Trafficking Syndicates By Femi Anamelechi The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’, has intensified enforcement operations across the South-West zone, seizing cocaine, cannabis, and other contraband while foiling 473 smuggling attempts in the past eight weeks. Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, the Comptroller of FOU Zone ‘A’, Gambo Aliyu, disclosed that the Unit, through its special anti-narcotics initiative Operation Hawk, recorded the interception of 3,340 parcels of synthetic cannabis, popularly known as ‘Ghanaian Loud’, weighing 1,540 kilograms. "This effort is an affirmation of our commitment to the fight against drug-smuggling syndicates in the Zone. Our analysis of the trend in recent times indicates that the traffickers are devising different methods to perpetuate illicit trade; therefore, there is a need for critical security stakeholders to upscale their intelligence sharing mechanism to cut the supply chain completely", Comptroller Aliyu said. In another operation, Comptroller Aliyu noted that officers of the unit intercepted a Toyota Highlander along the Lagos–Abidjan corridor, leading to the arrest of a 71-year-old suspect, with 6.4 kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine valued at about ₦2.35 billion recovered. Beyond drug seizures, he said the Unit recorded major interceptions of contraband, including 8,794 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 22 used Tokunbo vehicles, 485 pieces of used tyres, and other prohibited goods, with a total Duty Paid Value of over ₦5.5 billion. He also revealed the interception of four cylinders of high-grade mercury concealed in a vehicle at the Gbaji outpost, noting that the hazardous material would be transferred to the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) for further action. On revenue recovery, Aliyu said the Unit generated over ₦97.7 million through demand notices issued on improperly declared consignments during the period under review. Reaffirming the Unit’s resolve, Aliyu said FOU Zone ‘A’ would continue to deploy advanced technology to strengthen border security, while maintaining a balance between enforcement and trade facilitation. "While we maintain vigilance against smuggling, fraud and criminalities, the FOU remains a strong partner in trade facilitation. We continue to support legitimate trade through intelligence-driven operations that strike a balance between security enforcement and economic growth", he stated. The illicit drugs and three suspects were handed over to Commander Mohammed Kabiru of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigations.
