The Nigeria Customs Women’s Basketball Team secured their first victory in the FIBA Africa Women’s Basketball League, Zone 3 Qualifiers on Tuesday, 5 November 2024, in Liberia, overpowering Energie Basketball Club of Benin Republic with a convincing 58-39 win.
Defending champions of the Zone 3 qualifiers, the Border Girls made a dominant start from the initial jump ball, displaying superior skill and teamwork to outclass their Beninese opponents.
Following the match, Samuel Onikeku, the Sports Secretary of the Nigeria Customs Service, commended the team for their excellent performance, urging them to maintain their focus as they continue through the competition.
“Firstly, congratulations to the team for their determination and skill in securing this victory over Benin Republic. Much effort went into this win, and we are grateful to the Comptroller-General of Customs for providing the essential support that made our participation possible,” Onikeku remarked.
“We have one game down in the group stage, but there is no room for complacency. We must keep up the hard work to defend our title, which we claimed last year in Abuja, and secure qualification from our zone.”
Drawn into Group B, the Nigeria Customs team will face additional challenges against Liberia’s Commissioners, Côte d’Ivoire’s Societé Omnisport de l’Armée, and Benin’s Energie.
