The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) under the leadership of Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Adewale Adeniyi is set to make history as it hosts the inaugural Military/Paramilitary Wrestling Championship in Abuja.
During a press briefing held on 11 October, 2024, at the Nigeria Customs Headquarters, the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, appreciated CGC Adeniyi for his unwavering support for sports, particularly wrestling.
Igali commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its sponsorship and collaboration with the Wrestling Federation to bring this prestigious event to life. “This championship is a reflection of the strong partnership between the Nigeria Customs Service and the wrestling community. Through the leadership of CGC Adeniyi, the NCS has demonstrated its commitment to fostering sportsmanship, discipline, and excellence among Nigeria’s military and paramilitary agencies,” he stated.
The event, scheduled for October 19-25, 2024, will feature participation from various military and paramilitary agencies, all of whom are already preparing to showcase their best athletes. Igali noted that the championship is more than just a sporting event but a platform to identify future wrestling talents who could represent Nigeria on the global stage.
In a keynote address delivered by Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs (ACG) Headquarters, Isah Umar on behalf of CGC Adeniyi, the importance of sports in personal and professional development was highlighted. “The NCS believes in the power of sports to build mental and physical strength, instill leadership qualities, and encourage teamwork. This championship is another testament to our commitment to these values,” ACG Umar remarked.
With the strong backing of the NCS, the Local Organising Committee says it has set its sights on making the championship an annual tradition, creating a sustainable platform for talent development within Nigeria’s military and paramilitary community. The championship promises to be a competitive and thrilling event that will enhance camaraderie and sportsmanship among the participants.
