Customs Strengthens Ties with NSCDC, SON in Kwara By Bimpe Audu The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kwara Area Command, on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, received the Kwara State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abbas Mohammed, and the State Coordinator of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Oyewopo Abdulrazaq, during separate engagements aimed at strengthening inter-agency collaboration. The Acting Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Najeem Ogundeyi, hosted the delegations at the Command headquarters, where discussions centred on enhancing synergy, fostering mutual understanding and exploring new areas of cooperation to support the effective implementation of government policies. Speaking during the engagements, Deputy Comptroller Ogundeyi emphasised that no agency can operate effectively in isolation, noting that collaboration remains essential for efficient service delivery and national development. “Inter-agency collaboration remains fundamental to achieving our mandates. We must continue to strengthen synergy, share intelligence, and support one another to ensure effective service delivery and the successful implementation of government policies for national development,” he said. In their separate remarks, Commandant Mohammed described the visit as “a step towards deeper cooperation,” while Abdulrazaq noted that “sustained collaboration will enhance regulatory effectiveness.”

Customs Unleashes ‘Operation Hawk’, Hits Hard on Drug Trafficking Syndicates By Femi Anamelechi The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’, has intensified enforcement operations across the South-West zone, seizing cocaine, cannabis, and other contraband while foiling 473 smuggling attempts in the past eight weeks. Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, the Comptroller of FOU Zone ‘A’, Gambo Aliyu, disclosed that the Unit, through its special anti-narcotics initiative Operation Hawk, recorded the interception of 3,340 parcels of synthetic cannabis, popularly known as ‘Ghanaian Loud’, weighing 1,540 kilograms. "This effort is an affirmation of our commitment to the fight against drug-smuggling syndicates in the Zone. Our analysis of the trend in recent times indicates that the traffickers are devising different methods to perpetuate illicit trade; therefore, there is a need for critical security stakeholders to upscale their intelligence sharing mechanism to cut the supply chain completely", Comptroller Aliyu said. In another operation, Comptroller Aliyu noted that officers of the unit intercepted a Toyota Highlander along the Lagos–Abidjan corridor, leading to the arrest of a 71-year-old suspect, with 6.4 kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine valued at about ₦2.35 billion recovered. Beyond drug seizures, he said the Unit recorded major interceptions of contraband, including 8,794 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 22 used Tokunbo vehicles, 485 pieces of used tyres, and other prohibited goods, with a total Duty Paid Value of over ₦5.5 billion. He also revealed the interception of four cylinders of high-grade mercury concealed in a vehicle at the Gbaji outpost, noting that the hazardous material would be transferred to the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) for further action. On revenue recovery, Aliyu said the Unit generated over ₦97.7 million through demand notices issued on improperly declared consignments during the period under review. Reaffirming the Unit’s resolve, Aliyu said FOU Zone ‘A’ would continue to deploy advanced technology to strengthen border security, while maintaining a balance between enforcement and trade facilitation. "While we maintain vigilance against smuggling, fraud and criminalities, the FOU remains a strong partner in trade facilitation. We continue to support legitimate trade through intelligence-driven operations that strike a balance between security enforcement and economic growth", he stated. The illicit drugs and three suspects were handed over to Commander Mohammed Kabiru of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigations.

Nigeria Customs Reinforces Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Through Sensitisation Programme By Bimpe Audu The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reinforced its commitment to combating illicit financial flows and terrorism financing through a sensitisation programme on Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT), held at its Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja. The engagement, held on Monday, 4 May 2026, formed part of the Service’s first-quarter operational review meeting and training for officers of the AML/CFT Unit, focusing on enhancing capacity, promoting ethical standards and strengthening inter-agency collaboration. Speaking during the session, the Assistant Comptroller-General in charge of Headquarters, ACG Muhammad Shuaibu, said the initiative reflects the growing importance of AML/CFT operations within the Service and Nigeria’s broader financial and security framework. He noted that the impact of the Unit extends beyond seaports, airports and border stations, adding that its achievements over the past year have positioned it as a critical component in safeguarding the nation’s financial system. ACG Shuaibu also highlighted improvements in Nigeria’s financial ecosystem, noting that Nigerian-issued bank cards are now globally functional, enabling seamless international transactions with automatic currency conversion. “This is a major milestone. Nigerians can now travel and use their cards anywhere in the world, with transactions reflecting the local currency. This is a significant achievement for the nation,” he said. He further emphasised that postings to the AML/CFT Unit should be seen as opportunities for career growth and capacity development, rather than punitive assignments, while also referencing ongoing collaboration with the World Customs Organization (WCO) to align operations with global best practices. Also speaking, the Ag. Provost Marshal, Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Saulawa Sunusi, stressed the importance of integrity, professionalism and discipline in the discharge of duties. “Officers must remain disciplined, professional, and committed to ethical conduct. Integrity remains the foundation of everything we do,” he said. He urged officers to continually build their capacity through training and to demonstrate leadership by example, while maintaining high standards of punctuality, fairness and professionalism. Sunusi also highlighted the need for effective collaboration and conflict resolution within the Service, noting that strong internal synergy is essential for operational success. Participants were advised to remain vigilant, maintain high morale and carry out their duties without bias. They were also cautioned against the unauthorised sharing of sensitive information and urged to adhere strictly to established communication protocols. The session featured a lecture by Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Faisal Abubakar on service correspondence, where officers were guided on its importance and application in official communication. In his remarks, National Coordinator of AML/CFT, Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Mas’ud Salihu, highlighted the evolving nature of financial crimes, noting that illicit activities are increasingly shifting into digital and virtual spaces. Seme Customs Seeks Cross-Border Collaboration to Boost Trade, Curb Crime By Abass Quadri The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command, has called for stronger collaboration with trans-border stakeholders to enhance legitimate trade and tackle criminal activities along the Lagos–Benin corridor. The appeal was made during a series of familiarisation visits to traditional institutions and sister security agencies, as part of efforts to align with President Bola Tinubu's economic prosperity agenda. Speaking on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, at the Palace of the Alapa of Apa, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Abdullahi Kaila, stressed the importance of building strategic partnerships to discharge the Service’s mandate effectively. "We value the traditional institution for its role in promoting peace and unity, and we are here to partner with you to encourage lawful trade, which remains a key part of our mandate”, he said. Comptroller Kaila reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professionalism, noting that officers and men would continue to perform their statutory duties with respect for the culture and traditions of host communities. In his response, the Alapa of Apa Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba Oyekan Ilufemiloye, commended the Area Controller’s approach and described him as a respected professional among border communities. “I promise to always assist you in my area for anything you need.
