The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), under its Green Border Initiative, has conducted a “Clean Barracks Day” exercise across Customs barracks in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to promote environmental sustainability and hygiene.
The exercise, held on Saturday, 28 March 2026, is part of a monthly initiative that encourages residents to participate in sanitation and tree-planting activities within barracks communities.
Across the FCT, wives of officers and residents turned out in large numbers to clean their surroundings, clear waste, and plant trees, contributing to a healthier, greener environment.
The National President of COWA, Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi, led the exercise, visiting several barracks to participate in the activities and monitor compliance.
A total of 13 barracks were covered, including Karu, Mobay, Abdulwahab, Kuje, Nyanya, and Maraba.
Addressing participants during the visits, the National President emphasised the importance of environmental responsibility and long-term sustainability. She noted, “Some of the trees we see around these barracks today were planted many years ago. Today, we are planting more for the future.”
She further stated, “The trees we plant today will grow to provide shade, bear fruit, and create spaces for relaxation for those who come after us.”
The initiative continues to serve as a platform for promoting environmental consciousness, unity and collective responsibility among barracks residents.
The exercise was successfully carried out across all participating barracks, reflecting the commitment of COWA members and the wider Customs community to maintaining a cleaner and greener environment.
