The Customs Officers Wives Association (COWA), Tincan Island Port Command has engaged students of Christ Assembly Nursery and Primary school in a tree-planting exercise, as part of its Green Border Initiative to promote environmental sustainability.

The outreach programme, held in Apapa on Thursday, 12 March 2026, underscored the association’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges such as flooding, desertification, coastal erosion, plastic waste, heat stress, and drainage blockages through education and community engagement.

Speaking at the event, the COWA Chairperson TCIP, Mrs Justina Shidali said the initiative was designed to support national environmental priorities while raising environmental consciousness among young students. “This workshop is part of the COWA Green Borders Initiative which aligns with national environmental priorities,” she said.

Mrs. Shidali emphasised that COWA remains committed to addressing waste pollution and other environmental challenges affecting communities, noting that collaboration with other organisations is essential to achieving meaningful and measurable environmental impact.

In his remarks, the Customs Area Controller of the Tincan Island Port Command, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, explained that the Service’s Customs Cares initiative goes beyond infrastructure upgrades to creating a conducive learning environment for pupils.

“The CGC has instructed that we should see our commitment to supporting you. So we are here today to give you writing materials for over 1000 students. We will keep coming back to ensure that this learning environment is comfortable for every pupil,” he assured.

The school management expressed appreciation to the NCS for the support, noting that the items provided would help improve access to quality education for the pupils.

Recall that the school was adopted and renovated by the Tincan Island Port Command in July 2025 under the Service’s Customs Cares initiative, further strengthening the command’s commitment to community development.
