Strategic Thinking is Identified as Pillar of Modern Customs Administration

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, on 16 February 2026, emphasised the importance of strategic thinking in customs operations as the second batch of the Senior Customs Command and Leadership Course commenced at the Nigeria Customs Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). Senior officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) gathered for the intensive leadership programme aimed at strengthening institutional capacity.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Comptroller-General (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, the TRADOC Commander, Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs (DCG) Suleiman Chiroma, conveyed Adeniyi’s message, stating: “Leadership, discipline, and strategic thinking remain indispensable pillars of modern customs administration, and this course is designed to equip officers with the capacity to manage personnel, resources, and emerging trade and security challenges effectively.”

Chiroma further charged participants, saying: “You must approach this training with dedication and professionalism, because the knowledge and competencies you gain here will enhance service delivery and strengthen institutional growth across commands nationwide.”
In his remarks, the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of Human Resource Development, Ahmed Abe, described the programme as a pathway to leadership excellence, noting: “This course is a strategic platform for grooming future leaders of the Service. Management remains committed to continuous human capital development, and you must use this opportunity to improve your professional capacity as you advance in your careers.”

Earlier, the Commandant of the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College, Dow Gaura, welcomed participants and commended the initiative, stating: “The Service deserves commendation for sustaining impactful training programmes such as this, which are vital for improving operational effectiveness and upholding ethical standards.”
The ceremony’s highlight was the formal opening of the course by the TRADOC Commander, signalling the commencement of intensive academic and practical sessions designed specifically for Deputy Comptrollers. Senior officers, including members of the TRADOC management team and top officials from human resource and doctrine development departments, attended the event.
