The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) convened members nationwide on 23 May 2025 for a combined leadership training and annual convention at the Federal Secretariat Complex, Garki, Abuja.
The event attracted delegates from customs commands and featured a capacity-building workshop facilitated by renowned behavioural change coach Sam Obafemi, popularly known as “The Octopus”. The training, themed “The Wheel of Womanhood”, focused on emotional intelligence, personal development, and leadership.
Addressing participants, Obafemi underscored the importance of adaptability and emotional awareness in navigating challenges, stating, “The most flexible person in the room is the most powerful.” He introduced five critical intelligences essential for modern leadership: Intelligence Quotient (IQ), Emotional Intelligence (EQ), Social Intelligence (SQ), Adversity Quotient (AQ), and Cultural Intelligence (CQ).
Using relatable scenarios, he advised attendees to build strong support systems, embrace lifelong learning, and remain visible in personal and professional settings. He further encouraged them to understand the root causes of challenges, noting that real solutions begin with uncovering the ‘why’ behind the problem.
Following the training session, the event transitioned into the association’s annual convention, a more informal gathering where members reconnected and shared experiences. The atmosphere was defined by camaraderie, laughter, and reflections on their shared journey.
In her keynote address, the President of COWA, Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi, spoke on the importance of self-care and intentional living. She urged members to embrace the small joys of life, prioritise their well-being, and pursue meaningful activities that reflect positively on their families and communities.
Mrs Adeniyi also addressed newly appointed chairpersons of state chapters, urging them to take responsibility for their roles and to strive for impactful contributions. “Consciously or unconsciously, our actions inspire others,” she said, calling for a stronger culture of trust, mentorship, and solidarity among members.
The convention concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among attendees, who departed with practical leadership tools and a deeper appreciation for COWA’s unity and transformative mission.
