The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling smuggling networks and disrupting the supply chains of illegal substances.
During a press briefing held at the Customs Training College on Monday, 25 November 2024, the Coordinator of the Joint Border Patrol Team, Sector 2, South-West Zone, Lagos, Deputy Comptroller of Customs (DC) Mohammed Shaibu, highlighted the grave consequences of illicit drugs in circulation, linking them to organised crime, violence, banditry, kidnapping, and public health crises.
Expressing concerns over the growing threat of drug smuggling and other illicit activities, DC Shaibu urged Nigerians to avoid any involvement in smuggling or the trafficking of illicit substances.
He noted that the Service’s intensified efforts had led to significant seizures, including cannabis sativa, premium motor spirit (PMS), bales of used clothing, and other contraband worth over ₦556 million in recent weeks.
“Seizures made by the Sector over the past four weeks include: 674kg of cannabis sativa
816 bags of foreign parboiled rice (50kg each)
802 jerry cans of premium motor spirit (25 litres each)
285 bales of used clothing
61 jumbo sacks of used shoes
8 units of used vehicles
The total estimated Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized items is ₦556,431,200,” he stated.
Shaibu disclosed that the confiscated narcotics had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action.
Additionally, proceeds totalling ₦8,020,000 were remitted to the Federation Account following the auctioning of seized premium motor spirit.
DC Shaibu emphasised the critical role of public cooperation in combating smuggling and curbing the circulation of illegal substances. “We urge all patriotic citizens to partner with us in this fight. Your support is essential in identifying smuggling networks and routes,” he said.
He stressed that collaboration between citizens and government agencies is vital to safeguarding Nigeria’s economy and national security.
