Cameroon Defeat Burkina Faso 2-1 In 2021 AFCON’S Opening Match

Cameroon came from behind to beat Burkina Faso 2-1 in an incident-packed opener at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.

An acrobatic volley from Gustavo Sangare put the Burkinabe ahead midway through the first half in Yaounde.

However, two penalties from captain Vincent Aboubakar turned the game around for the hosts before half-time.

Indomitable Lions keeper, Andre Onana made two crucial second-half saves as Toni Conceicao’s side opened their Group A campaign with victory.

Team Nigeria Climb in Latest FIH Rankings, Men Now 46th, Women 37th in the World

The Nigeria men’s and women’s Hockey teams have moved up places in the latest Fédération Internationale de Hockey rankings released in January.

The movement is a reward to the achievements of the Nigeria national teams at the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

The Nigeria national men’s team finished 3rd for the first time in the competition’s history while the women’s team finished 5th.

After beating Kenya, Uganda at the tournament, the men’s team moved from 75th to 46th position in the world but remained 4th in Africa after South Africa, Egypt and Ghana.

The women’s team who played a 2-2 draw with Ghana, defeated Namibia, Uganda at the Africa Cup of Nations also moved from 58th position to 37th in the world, but remained 4th in Africa after South Africa, Ghana and Kenya.

B/Volleyball: Nigeria Hit Cotonou Ahead of Zone 3 U21 Championship

Nigeria’s Beach Volleyball team on Thursday arrived in Cotonou, Benin Republic ahead of the Zone 3 U21 Beach volleyball championship.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Chairman Media and Publicity of Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Honorable Famous Daunemigha on Thursday in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State.

The Zone 3 U21 Beach volleyball championship is scheduled for 28th to 30th January, 2022 in Cotonou.

According to the statement, four players (2 male and 2 female) and two coaches arrived the venue of the championship.

The male players are: Emenike Ezike (Nigeria Police Force) and Emmanuel Udah (Nigeria Customs Service) while the female players are: Esther Mbah and Happy Wushilang. The team will be tutored by John Iwerima and Christy Amadi.

Reacting to the camping exercise, John Iwerima said, “The players had a very conducive training setting at Badagry, Lagos state. The sand was natural and the players gave their best during every training exercises.

“I am optimistic that the player are ready to honor their motherland at the Zone 3 U21 Championship. The teams appreciation goes to the President of Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Engineer Musa Nimrod and the members of the Beach Volleyball Commission for their support to the team”.

2022 President Beach Volleyball Cup kicks off February 18th

The 2022 President Beach Volleyball Cup has been scheduled to hold between 18th to 23rd February at the twin beach volleyball court of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna state.

In a press release signed by the Chairman Media and Publicity of Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Hon Famous Daunemigha, the President Cup will feature U19 Boys/U19 Girls and seniors (male and female) which is open to states, organization and clubs.

Hon Daunemigha said the President Cup will afford NVBF the opportunity to rank players and select ahead of the forthcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games qualifiers.

The statement read, “The annual President Beach Volleyball Cup will feature the U19 Boys/U19 Girls and seniors (male and female). The Federation is focusing on how to give upcoming beach volleyball players the opportunity to showcase their talents and rank the senior players.

“There are series of beach volleyball championships the Nigeria Volleyball Federation will attend and the President Cup will provide a platform to select some of the best players in the country.”

Hon Daunemigha revealed that the NVBF Beach Commission chaired by Engineer Musa Nimrod is poised to see Nigeria becomes the hub of beach volleyball in Africa.

He said, “Beach Volleyball is becoming a household game in Nigeria. In 2021, we witnessed a lot of beach volleyball tournaments across the country including the South South. We are confident that Nigeria will soon become the hub of beach volleyball in Africa”.
