Sydney Exits Lockdown as Australia Gears Up to ‘Live with’ COVID

People living in Sydney, Australia’s biggest city, took to the streets on Monday to celebrate the end of almost four months of lockdown as fully vaccinated people were allowed once again to get their hair cut and go to cafes, restaurants and shops.

The city’s more than five million residents spent 106 days in lockdown as the authorities tried to curb the spread of the highly transmissible delta variant of covid.

With new infections now falling, new south Wales state recorded 496 cases on Monday and more than 70 percent of people over the age of 16 fully vaccinated, the city is now reopening and offering services to anyone who can prove they are vaccinated.

Since June, shops, schools, salons and offices have been closed for non-essential workers and there have been unprecedented restrictions on Australians personal freedom with people banned from travelling more than five Kilometres from home or visiting family.

Alec Baldwin Fatally Shoots Woman with Prop Gun On Movie Set

A woman has died and a man has been injured after actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on a New Mexico film set. Police in the US state said Mr. Baldwin discharged the weapon during filming for the 19th Century western Rust.

The woman, Halyna Hutchins, was flown to hospital by helicopter but died of her injuries. The man, director Joel Souza, was receiving emergency care. A spokesperson for Mr. Baldwin told newsmen that, the incident involved the misfiring of a prop gun with blanks.

Ms. Hutchins, 42, was working on the set as director of photography. Mr. Souza, 48, was taken from the scene by ambulance, but details of his injuries have not been disclosed. Police are still investigating the incident at Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular filming location, and no charges have been filed.

In a statement, a Santa Fe sheriff spokesman said Mr. Baldwin had spoken to detectives. “He came involuntarily and he left the building after he finished his interviews,” the spokesman said.

According to her personal website, Ms. Hutchins was from Ukraine and grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle. She studied journalism in Kyiv, and film in Los Angeles, and was named a “rising star” by the American Cinematographer magazine in 2019. She was the director of photography for the 2020 action film Archenemy, directed by Adam Egypt Mortime.

Ghana Star, Shatta Wale Arrested Over Death Threat Claim

One of Ghana’s most popular singers, Shatta Wale, has been arrested hours after he said he was on the run over fears of his life.

The police accused him and two others of “spreading false information” over an alleged gun attack on the reggae star.

Shatta Wale is best known for his collaboration with Beyoncé on her Lion King album, which expanded his fan base across Africa and globally.

The 37-year-old dancehall singer has not commented on the allegations against him.

In a Facebook post on Monday, the artist linked threats to his life to “a fake pastor” who had made a prophesy on a local radio station that he would be killed.

The police arrested him hours after the message, which sparked huge shock in Ghana.

The authorities also warned that anyone found to be sharing false information that “capable of disturbing the peace of the country” would be prosecuted.
