US, UK, EU Envoys Meet with Minister of Foreign Affairs Over Joint Statement

Following the joint statement put out by the United States, United Kingdom European Union and Canada, the minister of foreign affairs summoned the aforementioned countries’ envoys to the ministry for a closed door parley.

After a 45-minute meeting newsmen were invited in for a briefing where the minister and the envoys gave their remarks.

The US ambassador to Nigeria, Mary-Beth Leonards, who spoke on behalf of others said they were delighted to see Nigeria succeed, and that all challenges have solutions.

She stressed that the countries represented were attending as partners who want to see nigeria succeed, unified, peaceful and prosperous.

leonards went on to reaffirm that they are strong partners on issues of security be it physical or in terms of expanding opportunities and promoting mediation and dialogue; stating the position that free access to the ability to express oneself is very important especially in troubled times.

The minister of foreign affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama stated that FG would lift the ban on twitter on the condition of responsible use of the app. Onyeama further stated that measure was to stop twitter being used as platforms for destabilization and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities.

Legislators Query Whereabouts of $44 Million Ikoyi NIA Recovered Funds

The House of Representatives on Tuesday queried the whereabouts of the 44 million dollars recovered from the Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA) by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) in 2017.

The Office of the National Security Adviser had stated that it was not in custody of the money.

The Director of Finance and Admin in the Office of the National Security Adviser, Brig. General Ja’afaru Mohammed told the House Adhoc committee investigating the management of recovered fund between 2002 and 2020 that the ONSA had nothing to do with recovered funds and assets.

The Chairman of the adhoc Committee Rep. Adejoro Adeogun had quoted the Chairman of the nation’s anti-graft agency, EFCC as saying that the fund recovered from the NIA office in Okoyi was in the custody of the Office of the National Security Adviser.

President Buhari Calls for Synergy Among West African Countries

President Muhammadu Buhari has called for collaboration among countries in the West African sub-region and those in the Sahel to fight the security challenges confronting them.

The President stated this on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, while receiving the new Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mahamat Saleh Annadif.

Buhari in a statement by his Special Adviser, Femi Adesina, said, “You are our neighbour. You have vast experience on matters affecting the Sahel, having served for five years in Mali. I hope you will get the countries to work together to confront the issues affecting them.”

The President, while promising Nigeria’s support to the Special Rep to aid his new assignment, expressed hopes that under the auspices of UNOWAS, most problems especially those that have to do with instability in Libya, and how it affects all west African countries will be sorted out.

Annadif in his remarks, said he was visiting shortly after his appointment because he recognized Nigeria’s crucial role in West Africa. He noted that the problems of the Sahel region were not new to him, which is why, more than ever, he would depend on the help of Nigeria to succeed.

Lai Mohammed Says Twitter Has Written FG Over Suspension, Seeks Dialogue

The Nigerian Government, on Tuesday confirmed that Twitter has formally written to seek for dialogue on issues leading to the indefinite suspension of its operations in the country.

“I can confirm that Twitter has written the Federal Government that they are ready to talk. As we have always maintained, the door is not locked and we are open-minded but Twitter must work towards it,” Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed said.

The minister maintained the government’s position that it would not tolerate any platform that would be used to destabilize the country, adding that among other conditions for Twitter to resume operation in Nigeria, there must be an agreement as to what contents it could post.

Also, the minister stated that Twitter and its founder, Jack Dorsey, are indirectly liable for the losses the country suffered during the EndSARS protest. He alleged that Dorsey raised funds through Bitcoins to sponsor the EndSARS protest while his platform, Twitter, was used to fuel the crisis.
