Imo Turning To Another Borno, Nigerians Lament On Social Media

Nigerians on social media have lamented the persistent attacks by gunmen in Imo State, with many expressing fears that the South-East state was fast turning to another Borno State.

Borno State, with Maiduguri as capital city, is located in Nigeria’s North-East. The state rose to inglorious fame when Mohammed Yusuf, founder of militant Islamist group Boko Haram, was killed in 2009. Yusuf’s death birthed a macabre era of unprecedented uprising; carnage, bombings, kidnappings, amongst other crimes against humanity, even till date.

Millions of aboriginal Borno residents have also been displaced by the activities of the insurgents as military forces battle to clear the terrorists out of the entire North-East.

Unlike Borno in faraway North-East, Imo State located in the South-East geopolitical zone of the country has enjoyed relative peace until lately when daring gunmen started wreaking havoc in the state.

The gunmen particularly target police formations in their attacks. For instance, in what could be described as unmatched, gunmen on Monday attacked the Owerri Correctional Prison and freed over 1800 inmates. The attackers also razed the Imo State Police Command headquarters situated in Owerri and burnt all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters.

The hoodlums further freed the suspects in the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command and made an attempt to loot the police armoury in the state.

It had
gathered that the gunmen operated from 1am till 3am on Monday and sang solidarity songs at the Government House Roundabout for about 30 minutes before attacking the facilities. The police have since accused members of the Eastern Security Network, the security arm of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, of been the masterminds of the attacks but the secessionist agitators led by Nnamdi Kanu have since denied the allegation. But just barely 24 hours after the attacks, gunmen on Tuesday razed the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area Divisional Police Headquarters also in Imo. The brazen gunmen launched the attack despite the presence of the

then Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, in Owerri. Adamu had visited the state to assess the level of damage done by Monday attacks and to charge the cops to be ruthless before he was sacked.

Between February and March 2021, gunmen have burnt down Obowo, Abo Mbaise, Ihitte/ Uboma and Isiala Mbano Divisional Police Headquarters, killing three cops and injuring others. This is aside from other attacks on innocent citizens.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has condemned the Owerri attacks as acts of terrorism, one which many Nigerians feared was coming up in the South-East.

“Does Nigeria have the capabilities to engage in two blown wars at the same time –one in the North-East and another in the South-East?” asked a Facebook user, Kenneth Ani.

Another Facebook user, Faisal Haruna, wrote, “New Maiduguri is emerging”, while Usman Abubakar corroborated, “That was how Boko Haram started.”

“This was how Boko Haram started. Folks were happy as they attacked police stations until they turned on the people,” Waliu Aro stated.

Also, a tweep, @favouredhero lamented, “This is tending towards anarchy, it keeps on getting worse daily.”

“The rise of IPOB is a photocopy of the rise of Boko Haram, they will have to be curtailed anyways, but this time around it will be very costly…Nigeria remains,” @JackObinyan wrote.

However, with the appointment of a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, as the acting Inspector-General of Police, many Nigerians could only wish for a more secured and safe country.

Aisha Buhari Is a Voice Of Conscience Calling Politicians To Be Better –Tinubu

All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, says wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, is a voice of conscience calling politicians to be their better selves.

He also said Mrs Buhari played an active role during the 2015 and 2019 elections and has continued to enrich the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), with her contributions.

Tinubu stated this on Thursday at the public presentation of the biography of Mrs. Aisha at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The book, “Aisha Buhari: Being different,” was written by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Administration and Women Affairs, Dr Hajo Sani.

Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor, chaired the occasion on Thursday.

He said, “Given the First Lady’s achievement, no one can reasonably question the role of a First Lady any longer. Remember that there were those who argued that the constitution does not assign any official role to the First Lady. With Mrs Dr Aisha Buhari, their concerns have been forever laid to rest.

“First lady has played an uplifting, unifying role both in symbol and substance. She has been a voice of conscience calling us to be of our better self for the good of the nation and for the vulnerable among us.”

Buhari, who is currently in London for routine medical check-up, is not available for the presentation that attracted dignitaries from across the country.

He is, however, being represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof Ibrahim Gambari.

But currently gracing the event are Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; his wife, Dolapo.

Others attending are the Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege; and Mrs Folorunsho Alakija who is the Special Guest of Honour.

The royal fathers of the day are the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; and the Egbere Emere Okori Eleme, King Appolus Chu.

The statement stated that Idris made this known while playing host to the leadership of the FRCN, led by the Acting Executive Secretary, Iheanyi Anyahara.

It read in part, “He (Idris) saluted the courage of the FRCN in its determination to ensure compliance with internationally acceptable financial management and reporting standards, and advised that enforcement of the policy should be holistic to ensure optimal compliance by public and private entities.”

The auditor-general also pledged that his agency would ensure the timely production of Federal Government’s general purpose financial statements.

He stated that in compliance with the extant rules and regulations guiding its operations, the Federal Government treasury had bridged the hitherto deficit in the production of the Federal Government’s financial statements. Idris was quoted as saying, “The Federal Government treasury will continue to implement strategies that will guarantee timely production of general purpose financial statements of the Federal Government.”

On the request by the FRCN for partnership and synergy with the OAGF, Idris noted that the initiative was apt and would among other things promote healthy and mutually beneficial working relationship between the two agencies.

He approved the constitution of a joint committee comprising officials of the FRCN and OAGF to work out modalities for the proposed partnership.

In his remarks, Anyahara said the FRCN would support the OAGF to ensure a seamless implementation of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards accrual basis of accounting for general purpose financial statement in Nigeria.

Sports Festival Continues, FG Counters Edo Govt

The Federal Government says activities at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Edo State will continue as planned.

This is against the earlier announcement by the Local Organising Committee that the festival will end abruptly 12noon on Thursday (today) over lack of fund.

FG made its position known in a by Ramon Balogun, Assistant Director Press. Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, on Thursday morning.

The statement read, “The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has clarified that the 20th National Sports Festival, Edo 2020, is going on as planned with competitions going on as scheduled.

“The Ministry and the Main Organizing Committee for the festival are unaware of any plans or threat by the Edo State Government to shut down the sports festival as there has been no official meeting or communication that relayed such information.

“The Honorable Minister, Permanent Secretary and Directors are on ground in Benin City where the Festival is holding, and it is expected that the Edo State Government would formally invite the Ministry for a meeting should any urgency exist around the National Sports Festival or communicate officially with the Main Organizing Committee for the festival. The Ministry has no such communication.

“For the records, the Edo State government due to the cost implications of postponements occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic requested financial assistance from the Federal government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.

“The Ministry has since been at work to secure the financial assistance which it believes is being processed. The MYSD and EDSG are determined to deliver a successful National Sports Festival.” Edo State had raised the alarm over the Federal Government’s failure to provide fund 24 hours to the commencement of the festival.
