World Number one Ashleigh Barty and former U.S. open champion Bianca Andreescu completed contrasting semi-final victories in the Miami open, setting up a mouth-watering first career meeting between the grand slam winners in Saturday’s final.

Australian Barty spent the last year at home because of the covid-19 pandemic and Miami is her first tournament abroad since February 2020. she is also the defending champion at the WTA 1000 event after the 2020 edition was cancelled.

Andreescu also returned to action after a 15-month injury layoff at the Australian open in February, but after playing a follow-up event in Melbourne she had to withdraw from tournaments in Adelaide, Doha and Dubai with a Leg issue.

The 20-year-old Andreescu needed all of that physical strength on Thursday to beat Greek Rival Maria Sakkari 7-6 3-6 7-6 in a match that ended at 01:35 A.M. local time.

Andreescu said she has wanted to play Barty for a long time and was glad to finally have her chance.

Edo Female Football team pip Lagos team to win Gold

Team Edo Female Festival Football emerged winners of the football event at the 20th National Sports Festival NSF in Benin-City the Edo State Capital.

In a high tension-soaked match played this morning at the University of Benin-City Sports Complex, Edo Female Football team pip the hard fighting Lagos opponent 1-0 to clinch the Gold for the female football event.

Efe Osakpolor scored the Godwin Obaseki girls only goal of the encounter.

The Lagos State team gave the host team a good fight in the second half of the game, but the Goalkeeper of Team Edo Udoka Unawchukwu, was there to provide answers to all advances made by Lagos team towards getting an equalizer.

Team Edo came back hard fighting to increase the goal margin towards the last few minutes of the cracker, all shots went off target.

To reach the finals, Team Edo defeated their Delta counterpart 1-0 at the Semi-final, while Team Lagos humbled their Kaduna opponent 4-0 to get to the finals.

With this result, Team Edo female football squad has proved their supremacy over all other State female team that participated in the soccer events.

Following their recent conquest at the National Principals’ Cup, the AMAC Football Coaches Council paid a courtesy visit to the visioner of FOSLA Academy, Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi for driving the team to glory.

It would be recalled that two weeks ago, the Academy had written its name in fine gold by winning the cup after surmounting hurdles at the championship.

The Nigeria Women Football League Secretariat has declared opened the Transfer Window for the 2020/2021 NWFL Premiership season.

The Nigeria Women Football League Secretariat has declared opened the Transfer Window for the 2020/2021 NWFL Premiership season.

The NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said from her base in Abuja, that, the transfer window at the moment is opened only to Super Six teams.

“For now, only the Super Six clubs; Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, FC Robo and Sunshine Queens, are the only eligible clubs for the transfer window.

“The Transfer window is aimed at helping the Super Six clubs fortify their teams for tougher challenge.”

She noted that, the process of the Transfer Window will be done by internet online to enable easy and prompt access to the NWFL Secretariat in Abuja.

Adding that, clubs with successful transfers will collect the players’ licence(s) at the Dipo Dina International Stadium Ijebu-Ode from Saturday, April 17 before the kick-off of the NWFL Super Six Challenge.
