Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has announced the recruitment of 1,000 teachers for the public primary schools in the state.

Emmanuel made this known during the inauguration of the new members of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in Uyo on Friday.

He said that this was part of his administration efforts aimed at giving a new lease of life to the educational sector of the state for the benefit of residents.
The governor however, solicited absolute loyalty from persons given responsibilities and frowned at acts inimical to the progress of the state and its people.

“We have decided to add to you immediately another 1,000 primary school teachers. Primary education is key to development of any society and its the priority of government,” Emmanuel said.

He urged the newly inaugurated SUBEB members to live up to expectations of giving primary education a facelift in line with the agenda of his administration.

“A lot of people have heard that since last year we’ve been screaming that we are declaring a state of emergency in education.

“We are not likely going to finish that in two years, it is something that will span through a minimum of 10 years but we must start the foundation this year.

“We have invested a whole lot in infrastructure and basic education is key, that is why if you check, the people we go after to head the primary board are people that can best represent us anywhere,” he said
The governor commended the former Chairman of SUBEB, Prof. Maria Ikrok, and her team for a job well done.

He charged the new board to swing into action immediately.

Responding, the Chairman of SUBEB, Obong Paul Ekpo, expressed gratitude to God and the governor for finding him fit for the appointment.

He pledged to work hard and passionately to improve the primary education system.

“Let me thank God for the opportunity and also thank the Governor for finding me fit for this appointment.

“As the governor did mentioned, a state of emergency has been declared in the state education sector.
“We on behalf of our board pledge to be committed to making that critical contributions that will improve our educational system,” Ekpo said.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has told the Central Bank of Nigeria that cryptocurrencies should be regulated and not prohibited.

The CBN had, a few weeks ago, ordered all deposit money banks, non-banking institutions, and other financial institutions against enabling cryptocurrency tradings.

The apex bank ordered the institutions to close the accounts of customers with cryptocurrency transactions immediately, adding that a breach of the directive will attract severe regulatory sanctions.
According to the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who shed more light on the decision, it was taken in the best interest of Nigerians.

He said this while briefing a joint Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions; ICT and Cybercrime; and Capital Market.

However, Osinbajo, who spoke on Friday at the Bankers Committee Vanguard in Lagos, said that fear should not be applied in terms of cryptocurrencies.
The Vice President advised the monetary authorities to provide a “robust regulatory regime” that will address the concerns about cryptocurrencies.

“The point I’m making is that some of the exciting developments we see call for prudent and care in adopting them, and this has been very well articulated by our regulatory authorities,” he said.
“But we must act with knowledge and not with fear. We must ensure that we are in a position to benefit and prevent any of the adverse side effects or any of the possible criminal acts that may arise as the consequence of our adopting or taking any of these options.
Expressing optimism about cryptocurrencies, Osinbajo said in the coming years it “will challenge traditional banking, including reserve banking, in ways that we cannot yet imagine.”

As the federal government intensify efforts to end kidnapping, banditry and communal clashes, the need for traditional rulers be assigned constitutional roles has again been reiterated.

Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, Oluwo of Iwo who made the call after a courtesy visit to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, said traditional rulers should be appropriately recognised for them to be able to address issues before they lead to ethnic or communal crisis.
Also commenting on the farmers herders clashes, the Iwo monarch says the pastoralists should be trained and encouraged to adopt modern method of ranching.

State House Correspondent Jide Onifade reports that the traditional ruler also recommended improvement of welfare for the police and monitoring of the nation’s  borders to put an end to arms and small weapon proliferation in the country.
