Troops killed 128 terrorists, arrested 155 bandits

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Thursday said that in continuation of aggressive clearance operations aimed at decisively riding the North-Central zone of armed banditry and other forms of criminality, troops of Operation `Whirl Stroke’ have recorded a major success against criminal elements.

This was contained in a statement made available to reporters in Abuja by the Coordinator, Defence Media Operations (DMO), Major General John Eneche.

He explained that following aggressive operations at identified bandits’ enclaves, not less than 410 members of the Darul Salam terrorist group, including women and children, surrendered to the troops of operation Whirl Stroke and other security agencies deployed at Uttu in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. This development took place on 25 August 2020.

He added that troops of Operation Whirl Stroke, while on a robust clearance patrol around Uttu, on Wednesday stormed a Darul Salam terrorists bomb-making factory following actionable technical and human intelligence on the activities of the terrorists in the general area.

According to him, “In the course of the operation, troops recovered several Improvised Explosive Device making materials at the location including two scales, six rocket launcher bombs, one bag of fertilizer, half a bag of gun powder, 10 locally made hand grenades, one Rocket Propelled Grenade bomb fuse, one locally-made rocket launcher, two improvised explosive devices,13 Improvised rocket bombs, among others.

He explained that the camp was subsequently destroyed while troops were equally combing the surrounding forests for fleeing members of the sect.

Military Arrest 123 Suspects for Vandalism, Looting

The special military task force, operation safe haven, maintaining peace in plateau state has arrested 123 suspects for vandalising and looting items from private businesses and government properties in jos.

The commander of the task force, Maj.-Gen. Chukwuemeka Okonkwo presented the suspects to newsmen on Sunday in Jos.

Okonkwo said that the suspects defied the 24-hour curfew imposed by the state government to perpetrate the criminal act.

He said some of the suspects were arrested while looting properties at the plateau agricultural and development agency, located at Dogon Dutse of Jos North Local Government Area of the State.

Others, he said, were arrested while trying to vandalise and loot private shops in the west of mines area of the locality.

The commander said that the arrest was aimed at curbing all forms of criminality in the state, adding that it would also serve as a deterrent to others.

President Muhammadu Buhari has broken his silence on the shooting of #ENDSARS protesters in Lekki Lagos almost a week after, by suspected security operatives.

He vowed to ensure justice for “peaceful protesters who lost their lives.”

The President, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, explained he decided not to talk on the shooting incident until he had access to all the facts.

He also promised property owners and business owners affected by the arson across the nation would get justice.

Buhari, according to the statement, said:

“As the Judicial panel of inquiry set up by the Lagos State Government, starts sitting on Monday, President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his full support and optimism that it will assist the nation to give justice to peaceful protesters who lost their lives, security men who were murdered and property owners whose assets were vandalized and looted.

“The President, appealed to the people all over the country to maintain peace and brotherhood as the machinery of the government and the wheel of justice turn against the perpetrators of murder,  stealing, rape, assault and malicious damage to public and private property.

“President Buhari reiterated his appeal telling Nigerians not to turn on each other in hate as according to him, peace, brotherhood, and inter-communal harmony are central to the nation’s ethos.

“He said it is important that the police and other security agencies move everywhere to restore calm and normalcy as quickly as possible.”

The statement added“While the administration has  for its part, blocked so many means of looting public money in a war against corruption, it is the expectation that all civil authorities, community and religious leaders in the country must rise against the organized looting  we are witnessing in parts of the country.”

The President admonished families to reject items looted and brought home by their children.

He stated: “Families must turn back children who bring home unaccounted goods, in the same way wives must ask their husbands to return looted items brought home.

“Looting and vandalism will hurt trade and investment growth in our country, both large and small industries, as well as our hardworking people in the informal sectors of the economy.

#EndSARS: Governor Oyetola suspends curfew in Osun




The governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola, has suspended the 24-hour curfew he imposed on the state to tackle the rising violence and damages caused by hoodlums under the #EndSARS protests.

Mr Oyetola in a statement by the secretary of the state government, Wole Oyebamiji, noted the high level of compliance with the 24-hour curfew he had declared to forestall breakdown of law and order.

He said after a review and setting up of a panel of inquiry, the governor decided to lift the curfew.

On the MoU, “The state government has further approved henceforth 100% payment of monthly pensions for retirees earning N30,000 and below while other retirees not in the said category shall be paid 75% of their monthly pensions.

“After reviewing the situation of the last 48 hours and following the inauguration of the State’s Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality, the Governor, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, hereby suspends the 24-hour curfew, effective from today, Friday, October 23, 2020 till further notice.
