Abia To Drag EFCC To Court Over Sealed Properties

The Abia state government has threatened to drag the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to court over some “offensive notices” placed on some assets and estates in the state.

Some of the sealed properties include the Abia Mall, the Adelabu Housing Estate, the former township main market, Ogwumabiri, Millennium Luxury Apartment, Abia Hotels and Linto Estate, Old Timber Market, all in Umuahia.

Abia state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of state Chief Uche Ihediwa who made announcement of taking the EFCC to court while fielding questions from newsmen, said some of the assets sealed by the anti-graft ageny belong to the state government which entered into partnership arrangements with credible investors for the development of those properties under the public private partnership (PPP).

Ihediwa described the action of the EFCC as “unwarranted and unlawful” and further asked the agency to issue an unreserved apology to the state within seven days in view of the inconvenience its action caused.

The commissioner alleged that the EFCC who did not write the state government to “find out the ownership of the said properties whose title documents are domiciled in the State Ministry of Lands” before sealing them off,  caused harm to the state economy by scaring investors.

Independent reported that Ihediwa maintained that the law establishing the EFCC makes it clear that the commission can only seal property of persons under investigation. He affirmed that the ownership of the property in question is not under investigation as he recalled how same anti-graft agency, investigated the ownership of most of those properties and the certificates of occupancy (CoO) and public private partnership agreement between the state government and investors of the various assets in 2006.

ATTACK ON AKBC and FACILITIES IN UYO ( Watch Video)

Published

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, condemns in the strongest terms the destruction on the Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation, Administrative Building located along Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo and other facilities within the metropolis by hoodlums masquerading as #ENDSARS protesters.

These attacks are uncalled for and meaningless. Certainly, this is not the way to go. It is a classic case of blaming the doctor for the disease of the victim.

We urge security agencies to be on top of the situation to prevent further wanton destruction of lives and property and also ensure that perpetrators of these dastardly acts are brought to book in accordance with the laws of our State.

The Union further commends His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel for the swift response to the ugly development by imposing a curfew in the State to control the situation.

There are strong indications that some Super Eagles stars may boycott next month’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nation double-header against Sierra Leone over safety concerns.

#EndSARS protests against police brutality and extrajudicial killings have rocked the country in the last two weeks, with the military and police killing peaceful protesters.

On Tuesday, eyewitnesses claim about seven lives were lost, with several others injured when soldiers opened fire on protesters in a bid to disperse them from the Lekki toll gate in Lagos — a focal demonstration ground for the #EndSARS campaign.
